Do you have a favourite photograph of your family? More importantly are you in it?
As parents, we are always happy to photograph the kids, but we’re less happy to be in front of the camera. When it comes to professional family portraits in our studio, so often we’ll hear the following excuses from parents:
“Oh no, we’ll just have photos of the kids today ~ I didn’t do my hair/makeup”
“Maybe I’ll book another session when the kids are abit older ~ I may have lost some weight by then”
Will your kids have lovely family images to look back on in years to come?
One of my favourite images is a professional portrait that was taken of me with my family as a child. Why is it my favourite? Because I still remember the experience of going to the photography studio, but more importantly, this is one of the few images I have of us all together as a family.
My Dad passed away when I was 17 and we very quickly realised that more often than not, he was the one behind the camera. Photographs of him on his own were few and far between, let alone family shots of us all together.
As adults we don’t look back at childhood photographs and reflect that ‘Mum was in need of a haircut or needed to lose weight’; instead we reminisce and appreciate the happiness that may be linked to that particular visual memory.
It is so important that we exist in photographs, if not for ourselves, for our children and their children. Don’t be the person always hiding behind the camera ~ take it in turns amongst yourselves to take the photographs or set up your phone or camera on timer so you can all be in the photo. Better still, book a professional family portrait session ~ celebrate your family and more importantly acknowledge that you are a significant and key person in your family unit.
Exist in photographs…… no excuses!
